In January 2016, WFAIGH partnered with United Nations University – International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) to hold an Urban Thinkers Campus in Kuching, Malaysia. Its aim was to crystalize key themes essential for healthy, just and sustainable urban development as inputs for Habitat III, the UN conference on housing and sustainable urban development in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016.

This successful event culminated in an outcome statement called People, planet and participation: the Kuching Statement for healthy, just and sustainable urban development  which is now published in Health Promotion International.  The statement was combined with art and text into a publication called ‘THRIVE 2: Health and Wellbeing in the City We Need,’ to bridge conceptual barriers and spur new thinking.

At PrepCom 3, the third and final session of the preparatory committee for Habitat III, UN member states negotiated toward a consensus draft of the New Urban Agenda (NUA) to be adopted in Quito. The NUA will strongly influence priorities and modalities for sustainable urban development for decades to come. UNU-IIGH used this opportunity to launch the new THRIVE 2 publication drawing much-needed attention to the health and wellbeing of humans and the planetary systems that support them.
